What is the difference between screening and diagnostic mammography?

Screening Mammography
Mammography plays a key role in the early detection of breast cancer. It can reveal the presence of cancer long before it can be felt or cause symptoms. Current guidelines from American College of Radiology (ACR) recommend screening mammography every year for women, beginning at age 40. Research shows that annual mammograms lead to the early detection of breast cancers, when they are small and more easily treated and cured. Women who have had breast cancer or are at higher risk due to a family history of the disease should talk to their doctor about when and how often they should be screened.

Diagnostic Mammography
Diagnostic mammography refers to the same procedure as screening mammograms, only the scanning is focused on a particular area of interest because the doctor has reason to suspect the presence of cancer or some other abnormality. It may be that the patient has symptoms (breast lump, pain, skin changes or nipple discharge) or that the findings on her screening mammogram were unclear. About 10% of screening mammograms are inconclusive and require follow up with diagnostic mammography. A recommendation for diagnostic mammography is not necessarily a reason for concern. The majority of women who have a diagnostic mammogram are found not to have cancer.

Image Wisely™

At Winter Park Memorial Hospital, your well-being is our utmost concern. That’s why we’re the only imaging center in the Winter Park area with the Image Wisely™ level-three designation, which ensures that we practice radiation safety and follow low-dose protocols during all imaging procedures, resulting in a reduced amount of exposure to radiation for our patients compared to our competitors.

We didn’t stop there. We’re also accredited by the American College of Radiology (ACR) ensuring we adhere to the highest national standards for image quality and radiation safety.

And because our onsite breast-imaging radiologists from Radiology Specialists of Florida (RSF) are specially trained in breast imaging, they are able to more accurately detect any abnormalities through more defined images and precise interpretations.

The services we offer include:

  • Digital screening mammography
  • Digital diagnostic mammography
  • Ultrasound
  • Breast biopsy (ultrasound-guided, MRI-guided and stereotactic-guided)

Hologic Dimensions Affirm – Upright Breast Biopsy

Florida Hospital for Women – Winter Park now offers upright stereotactic breast biopsies. With this, we are able to give you a more comfortable experience. The new system allows for the localization and accurate targeting of lesions that can be difficult to detect with traditional biopsy techniques. The upright stereotactic breast biopsy, allows you to comfortably sit in a chair, as opposed to laying on your stomach, while our experts perform the procedure. This is also faster, more natural and provides a shorter approach to the specific area.
