Thoracic and Pulmonary

Roughly 10 percent of Americans suffer from some type of lung disorder, including asthma, emphysema and lung disease. The experts at Winter Park Memorial Hospital have the experience and advanced technologies to accurately assess and effectively treat patients with pulmonary conditions. We not only use the latest therapies and medications, but also function as teachers and educators, working to help individuals with compromised cardiopulmonary systems take steps to prevent further or recurring illness.

Our full spectrum of pulmonary services includes:

  • Breathing exercises
  • Bronchodilator therapy
  • Bronchial clearance therapy
  • Pulmonary function studies and screens
  • Noninvasive ventilation
  • Invasive ventilation
  • Emergency Department respiratory care

The Respiratory Care Department at Winter Park Memorial Hospital is available to our heart patients around the clock, providing the compassionate, patient-centered care that has been Florida Hospital’s hallmark for more than a century.

Better Breathers Support Group

Better Breathers is Winter Park Memorial Hospital’s free, monthly community support and education program for patients with lung disease as well as their friends and family members. We provide a short socialization time with live piano music and refreshment so that participants can get acquainted with similar health challenges, followed by an education and informative presentation. In these presentations, a variety of health care professionals (e.g., physicians, respiratory therapists, exercise physiologists, etc.) speak to the group about ways they can better manage their lung disease.

Sponsored by Winter Park Memorial Hospital/Florida Hospital Pulmonary Rehabilitation and the American Lung Association, the Better Breathers Support Group meets from October to May, on the second Friday of each month from 12:45 p.m. to 2 p.m. in the Winter Park Memorial Hospital/Florida Hospital Library auditorium.

Dedicated Cystic Fibrosis Patient Rooms

In 2011 Winter Park Memorial Hospital celebrated the opening of two new patient rooms, created specifically for patients diagnosed with cystic fibrosis (CF) and other diseases that require intensive care for long periods in a hospital. These new rooms are unique spaces that create a comfortable environment for both patients and visitors. They allow CF patients to remain in one location, and provide amenities such as flat screen televisions, chairs that turn into beds for extended family member stays, new flooring and walls painted in soothing colors.
