We are proud to offer our neighbors some of the most advanced treatments available for cancer treatment. These include:

  • High dose rate brachytherapy (HDR): HDR is an innovative internal radiotherapy technique in which radioactive materials are placed in direct contact with cancer tissues using catheters or wires, ensuring that a maximum radiation dose is given where it is needed most while sparing the healthy surrounding tissue.
  • Image-guided radiation therapy (IGRT): IGRT is a radiation treatment guided by imaging systems such as CT scans or ultrasound. These images are used to ensure the accurate placement of the radiation treatment.
  • Intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT): IMRT is a sophisticated form of external beam radiation therapy that allows oncologists to precisely target the radiation beams at tumors and avoid damaging the surrounding healthy tissue.
  • MammoSite radiation therapy system: This is a highly targeted procedure performed after a lumpectomy in which a catheter is used to insert a radiation seed into the breast for a few minutes. These treatments occur twice a day for five days. After each treatment, the seed is removed, leaving no radiation in the breast between treatments.
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI): At FHCI Winter Park, we use the Siemens Medical MEGNETOM Espree, the world’s only 1.5-Tesla open-bore MRI. This state-of-the-art technology enables us to pinpoint accurate treatment positions, while providing the highest possible level of patient comfort.
  • Prostate seed implants: Radioactive seeds the size of rice are placed into a cancerous prostate. These seeds can be left in permanently, as they give off radiation for a specific period of time. These are often an effective alternative to radical surgery.
  • Radiosurgery: FHCI Winter Park has the capability to provide brain radiosurgery and body radiosurgery, in which the tumor is cauterized in one to three treatments while sparing nearby structures. This technique is used to treatment tumors of the brain, spine, liver and lung.
  • Three-dimensional conformal radiation therapy (3D-CRT): 3D-CRT uses sophisticated computer-assisted tomography scans or magnetic resonance imaging scans to create detailed 3-D representations of the tumors and surrounding organs so that radiation beams can be delivered with precision.
