Urology and Nephrology
Using state-of-the-art technology, our experienced urologists perform advanced, highly effective urological procedures and treatments for patients in our communities. In fact, we have become an international educational resource for physicians to observe and learn from our techniques.
What is urology and nephrology?
Urology is the focus of the urinary tract, and nephrology focuses on the kidneys and their function. These integrated specialties provide comprehensive care for both men and women, from kidney stones or urologic cancer, prostatitis to bladder disorders.
Focusing on the urinary tract, urology is a medical and surgical specialty that diagnoses and treats urological conditions, such as urinary tract infections, overactive bladder, kidney stones, male infertility and prostate cancer. While these conditions require different urological treatments, they often have related symptoms.
Urologists mainly focus on these organs that make up the urinary tract:
- Adrenal glands
- Male reproductive organs
- Urinary bladder
Nephrology, a medical specialty focusing on the kidneys, helps treat patients with conditions such as acute renal failure, kidney disease, kidney stones, hypertension and autoimmune diseases like lupus. Many times the kidneys are affected by other conditions throughout the body; therefore, patients may be referred to a nephrologist or urologist along with another specialist.
Perhaps one of the most serious urological conditions, prostate cancer, is second most common cancer in American men, only ranking behind skin cancer. While this cancer is treatable, it is usually caught very late because patients may be embarrassed to talk about their symptoms. With our advanced diagnostic technology, early diagnosis can save lives.
