Jonathan W Phillips, MD
Biographical Sketch for Jonathan W Phillips, MD
Growing up in Toronto Canada as a student athlete in track and field and as a soccer player, Dr. Phillips took a keen interest in sports and sciences and was determined to explore the area of Sports Medicine. Having witnessed the medical ailments that his grandfather suffered, he became driven to also pursue Family Medicine and to approach medical health and wellness in ways that were different to what he had observed and experienced.
His approach to treating patients is based upon his fundamental premise that it is important to truly look at the bigger picture and first attempt to understand the cause of the ailments or issues that the patient is experiencing. This is best done by listening carefully via a process of interviewing and investigating the problem. Everyone is unique and hence, every situation has a range of nuances and variables that need to be taken into account. A key part of Sports Medicine involves proactive and preventative steps as well as education. This will help to reduce future injuries and also help with the treatment process towards overall wellness.
Dr. Phillips is the proud father of three children and has been inspired by his daughter to study martial arts and work towards his black belt. To keep fit, he enjoys weight lifting and staying physically active. He currently is serving as the Primary Care and Sports Medicine physician for the Tampa Bay Storm. Dr. Phillips believes that everyone needs to find their right level of physical activity and find a “coach” to keep them motivated and on track.
In 2012, Dr. Phillips completed his Sports Medicine fellowship training at USF Morton Plant. He is board certified from the American Board of Family Medicine and Sports Medicine.
