Symptoms and Signs of Vulvovaginitis

Symptoms of vulvovaginitis are consistent in most cases, with some variations unique to the specific cause of the condition. For example, yeast infections cause a thick, white vaginal discharge and genital itching. Bacterial vaginosis may result in a thin, grey discharge with a fishy odor. The symptoms related to trichomonas vaginitis include a heavy discharge that may be green or yellow-gray, genital itching and vaginal odor.

Common signs of vulvovaginitis include:

  • Inflammation with redness, irritation and swelling of the labia and perineal area
  • Genital itching
  • Painful burning when urinating
  • Foul vaginal odors
  • Vaginal discharge
