Screening and Tests for Vulvovaginitis

In screening for vulvovaginitis, the doctor performs a pelvic exam that may show red, tender areas on the vagina and vulva associated with the condition. Other exams used in diagnosing vulvovaginitis include a wet prep test, also called the vaginitis test or wet mount test that detects infections from bacteria or yeast. Taking a culture of the vaginal fluids may identify the specific organism responsible for the infection. When no signs of infection appear, the doctor may recommend a biopsy of the irritated area.
