Screening for vaginal dryness requires a physical examination. A pelvic exam will reveal if the walls of the vagina are reddened, pale or becoming thin. A medical history helps the doctor determine if the cause is related to irritants, medications or other causes so he can prescribe the best treatment.
The tests for vaginal dryness include:
- Hormone tests to show if levels of estrogen are low
- Urine tests to check for infection
- A wet prep test, also called the vaginitis test or wet mount test, detects infections of the vagina not related to the urinary tract
- Pap test to rule out cancer
