Women should avoid heavy lifting, such as in a bodybuilding program or some occupations, to prevent excess strain on the pelvic muscles. Proper weight maintenance through diet and regular exercise also puts less strain on muscles that hold the uterus. Not smoking and avoiding excessive dust or other environmental factors that can cause a chronic cough may also help in the prevention of uterine prolapse.
