Uterine Cancer (Endometrial Cancer)

Causes of Uterine Cancer

While the causes of uterine cancer or any form of cancer is unknown, doctors have observed risk factors of uterine cancer. It’s important to know these risk factors to help prevent this disease or detect it early enough for successful treatment. These are some of the risk factors of uterine cancer:

  • Age (the risk increases with age)
  • History of endometrial hyperplasia or polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS)
  • Estrogen replacement therapy (ERT)
  • Diabetes
  • Obesity and high fat diet
  • A personal history of breast cancer, ovarian cancer, or an inherited form of colon cancer
  • Previous history of tamoxifen for treatment/prevention of breast cancer
  • Race (African American women have two times the risk of white or Asian women)
  • Personal history of pelvic area radiation therapy
  • Menstrual period began before age 12
  • Menopause after age 55
  • Never having children

These risk factors do not mean patients will get uterine cancer. This list simply shows factors that may increase a patient’s likelihood of developing uterine cancer. If you are at risk for cancer, don’t wait to speak to a doctor about regular screening for uterine cancer.
