Testing for Umbilical Hernia

Screening for an umbilical hernia is performed as part of a physical examination. After collecting medical history and recording symptoms and signs, the doctor will palpate the lower abdomen to locate a possible bulge near the belly button.

If further confirmation is required, an X-ray, CT scan, or an Ultrasound are reliable tests for capturing images of the lower abdominal region. This film can be reviewed to diagnose an umbilical hernia. In diagnosing this hernia, the health care provider can order a consult with a surgeon to discuss surgical treatment options.  

The following screening and tests are conducted to diagnose an umbilical hernia:

Physical examination (palpate lower abdomen to locate bulge near the belly button)

  • X-ray
  • CT Scan
  • Ultrasound
  • MRI
