Total Hysterectomy

Side Effects of Total Hysterectomy

As with any surgery, a total hysterectomy carries risks associated with complications and side effects. These can include:

  • Injury to the bladder or uterus
  • Pain during intercourse and/or decreased interest in sex
  • Early menopause (if the ovaries are removed)
  • Increased risk of heart diseased (if the ovaries are removed before menopause); estrogen replacement therapy may help decrease this risk
  • Infection
  • Breathing problems
  • Blood clots
  • Bleeding
