Side Effects of Tissue Plasminogen Activator (TPA)

While this treatment is considered safe, there is a risk patients may experience side effects of tissue plasminogen activator (tPA). The side effects range from mild to severe, so be sure to ask your doctor about what you can expect to experience.

For patients with bleeding in the brain due to a variety of reasons like surgery or trauma, tPA can be deadly. Doctors at Florida Hospital require a CT scan and physical exam before administering tissue plasminogen activator. These are other conditions that may reactive negatively to cause deadly or damaging side effects of tPA:

  • Head injuries
  • Bleeding issues
  • Bleeding ulcers
  • Pregnancy
  • Recent surgery
  • Blood thinning medications
  • Trauma
  • Uncontrolled high blood pressure.

Even when deemed healthy enough for tPA therapy, other serious side effects may occur including these dangerous conditions:

  • Hemorrhage or bleeding
  • Minor bleeding in the gums/nose occur in 25% of patients
  • Bleeding in the brain occurs in 1% of patients
