Comprehensive Stroke Care

Each year, more than 600,000 Americans suffer a stroke. Many factors put you at risk for stroke—some manageable and others, such as heredity and age, are beyond your control. Fortunately, we’re one of Tampa’s few AHCA (Agency for Health Care Administration) accredited Comprehensive Stroke Centers, equipped to handle these time-sensitive critical emergencies.

Our interdisciplinary team approach combines a number of related service areas, including the acute stroke team, neurointerventional radiology, neurosurgical and lab services, neuroimaging, as well as rehabilitation.  This team of specialists work together to create a program of treatment and recovery just for you.

We have been awarded the Get With The Guidelines – Stroke GOLD Quality Achievement Award from the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association and have been recognized as a recipient of their Target: Stroke Honor Roll for our expertise in stroke care. We have also received certification by The Joint Commission in collaboration with the American Stroke Association as a Primary Stroke Center. This achievement of certification signifies that the services Florida Hospital Tampa provides meet critical elements to achieve long-term success in improving outcomes for stroke victims and further solidifies Florida Hospital Tampa’s expertise in stroke care.

The co-directors of our innovative Stroke Program are James Lefler, MD and David Decker, MD. Dr. Lefler is a renowned neurointerventional radiologist, trained in a specialty known as Endovascular Surgical Neuroradiology, which uses new, minimally invasive techniques to treat patients previously considered too ill for procedures involving the vessels of the head and neck. Dr. Decker is a renowned neurologist who specializes in stroke care and has board certifications in vascular neurology and neurocritical care.

Combined with our certified inpatient rehabilitation center, the Neuroscience Institute allows Florida Hospital Tampa to offer unified, coordinated care for stroke patients from diagnosis to treatment to recovery.
