Comprehensive Stroke Care

Florida Hospital Tampa is one of only three AHCA (Agency for Health Care Administration) accredited comprehensive stroke centers in Tampa, and one of 18 in the entire state of Florida, who are equipped to handle these time-sensitive critical emergencies.

Our Comprehensive Stroke Care encompasses not only leading-edge technologies and therapeutics for acute stroke patients, but also system-wide initiatives on stroke prevention, rehabilitation, education, community awareness and clinical research.

We have also received certification by The Joint Commission in collaboration with the American Stroke Association as a Primary Stroke Center. This achievement of certification signifies that the services Florida Hospital Tampa provides meet critical elements to achieve long-term success in improving outcomes and further solidifies Florida Hospital Tampa’s excellence and expertise in stroke care.

We are equipped to meet the needs of hemorrhagic (bleed) or ischemic (clot) stroke patients and can also treat ischemic stroke within eight hours after symptom onset. For patients in the throes of an acute stroke, this is important because time is the most critical factor in preventing permanent damage. As a result of our Comprehensive Stroke Care designation, we are able to provide more aggressive stroke care management and rehabilitation to patients.

The stroke team at Florida Hospital Tampa combines highly skilled physicians, nurses and allied health professionals with state-of-the-art technology to provide dedicated, immediate care to stroke patients in the Tampa Bay area.

The co-director of our innovative Stroke Program is renowned neurointerventional radiologist, James Lefler, MD. Dr. Lefler is trained in a specialty known as Endovascular Surgical Neuroradiology, which uses new, minimally invasive techniques to treat patients previously considered too ill for procedures involving the vessels of the head and neck.

Combined with our certified inpatient rehabilitation center, the Neuroscience Institute allows Florida Hospital Tampa to offer unified, coordinated care for stroke patients from diagnosis to treatment to recovery.
