Chest Pain Emergency Room

Each year, about 1.2 million Americans suffer a heart attack. It’s important to understand the symptoms of a heart attack and when to call 9-1-1. When these symptoms occur, every second can make a difference in saving a life. That’s why our Chest Pain Emergency Room was designed to quickly evaluate patients who are suffering from chest pain or other symptoms of a heart attack. Our sophisticated facility is staffed 24 hours a day with physicians and nurses who are trained and experienced in cardiovascular emergencies.

Many people who experience the signs of a heart attack delay seeking treatment or attempt to drive themselves to the hospital.  This can be life threatening because time is tissue and every minute counts. An ambulance can drive faster and safer, and has equipment to begin providing care, which is important because 20 minutes after a coronary event, thousands of heart cells begin to die each minute that blood flow has been interrupted.

Common reasons people delay seeking care include:

  • Believing that symptoms are self-limited or not serious
  • Attributing symptoms to other preexisting conditions
  • Fear of embarrassment for false alarm
  • Reluctance to trouble others unless they are “really sick”
  • Preconceived stereotype of who is at risk
  • Lack of knowledge in the importance of rapid action and calling 9-1-1

The Emergency Room at Florida Hospital Tampa has been accredited by the Society of Cardiovascular Patient Care, which means that we meet and exceed the guidelines set for the gold standard in acute cardiac care. We were the first in Tampa Bay to be awarded this distinction and the ER team works in collaboration with our renowned cardiovascular team at Pepin Heart Institute, located at Florida Hospital Tampa.

Our Chest Pain Center’s protocol-driven and systematic approach to patient management allows physicians to reduce time of treatment during the critical early stages of a heart attack, when treatments are most effective, and to better monitor patients when it is not clear whether they are having a coronary event. Monitoring helps ensure that a patient is not sent home too early or admitted to the hospital when it’s not necessary.

In case of an emergency, don’t delay.  Always call 9-1-1 immediately. Then tell the emergency team, “Take me to Florida Hospital Tampa.”
