Bariatric Weight Loss Surgery Options

Procedures known as the laparoscopic adjustable gastric band and the sleeve gastrectomy are the weight loss surgeries typically recommended at Florida Hospital Tampa’s Surgical Weight Loss Center.

The laparoscopic adjustable gastric band (also commonly referred to as the LAP Band or Realize Band) is a device positioned around the upper stomach. When the band is tightened by filling it with saline, a small portion of food will fill the upper stomach, satisfying a person’s hunger for several hours.

Sleeve gastrectomy, or gastric sleeve, is a procedure that divides the stomach to create a small pouch, allowing a smaller amount of food to give a person the feeling of being full.

Both bariatric surgeries provide significant health benefits through proven long-term weight loss. Not only are health conditions and diseases such as type 2 diabetes, hypertension and sleep apnea often improved or eliminated, the effect of weight loss on the quality of life and mental well-being is invaluable.
