A stroke is a medical emergency in which there is an interrupted blood supply to the brain and brain cells begin to die. Stroke is one of the leading causes of death in the United States. The most common kind of stroke is an ischemic stroke, which is caused by a blood clot that blocks or plugs a blood vessel in the brain. The other kind, a hemorrhagic stroke, is caused by a blood vessel that breaks and bleeds into the brain. A transient ischemic attack (TIA), also called a “mini-stroke,” takes place when there is a temporary interruption of blood flow to the brain. If you have a TIA, it is important to see a doctor so that he or she can locate the cause before the condition turns into a full-fledged stroke.

If brain cells die after being cut off from oxygen-rich blood, symptoms occur in the parts of the body that these brain cells control. Symptoms include sudden numbness of the face, arm or leg (especially on one side of the body); sudden confusion, trouble speaking or understanding speech; sudden trouble with vision in one or both eyes; sudden trouble walking, dizziness, or loss of balance or coordination; and sudden severe headache. If you have any of these symptoms, go to a hospital immediately: acute stroke therapies will seek to stop a stroke while it is happening.
