Spinal Tumors

Causes of Spinal Tumors

All tumors form when a cell grows uncontrollably to form a mass of cells. While doctors know how a tumor forms, the causes of spinal tumors and all benign and cancerous tumors are unknown. Research continues to provide insight into the cause, but the answer has yet to be discovered.

Through this research, doctors have found some information that may lead to the causes of spinal tumors. Sometimes, spinal tumors originate in the spine, but other times the tumors spread from other areas of the body (metastasize). Also, some spinal tumors are caused by a genetic disorder, like neurofibromatosis, or exposure to toxic chemicals or radiation.

These are just a few of the causes of spinal tumors, though the underlying cause is still being researched.
