While the causes of sinus tumors are not yet known, researchers have uncovered some risk factors that may contribute to the growth of sinus tumors. These factors do not indicate tumors will definitely develop, but instead provides information on the patient’s risk of developing tumors.
Some scientists suggest exposure to certain compounds, many found in manufacturing may be what causes sinus tumors. Some of these compounds include the following:
- Nickel dust
- Mustard gas
- Wood dust
- Furniture, leather and textile manufacturing compounds
It is also suspected that previous Epstein-Barr infections (one of several viruses in the herpes family of viruses) may cause sinus tumors. These theories are still under investigation.
