Respiratory Distress

Conditions Related to Respiratory Distress

There are a number of potential complications related to respiratory distress syndrome and its treatments, including:

  • Bronchopulmonary dysplasia, a chronic lung condition that can sometimes be fatal, and in other cases may require a child to be on oxygen support for a long time and/or cause long-term damage to the lungs
  • Intraventricular hemorrhage (bleeding in the brain)
  • Bleeding in the lung
  • Blood clots due to an umbilical arterial catheter
  • Abnormal blood vessel development in the retina, which can cause blindness
