If you notice a prolapse, there are some steps you can take at home. While the individual is lying down on his or her side in a knee-chest position, use a soft, warm, wet cloth to gently apply pressure to the mass to push it back through the anal opening. This may fix the problem in the short term, but the only cure for rectal prolapse in adults is surgery.
There are a couple different treatment options when it comes to surgery for rectal prolapse. Abdominal or rectal surgery may be required; for some patients, the doctor may perform the repair laparoscopically.
In children, treatments for the underlying conditions usually alleviate the rectal prolapse.
