Preeclampsia

Causes of Preeclampsia

While there is no known cause for preeclampsia, risk factors for preeclampsia, a severe form of high blood pressure during the later part of pregnancy, include:

  • High blood pressure before pregnancy
  • High blood pressure or preeclampsia in earlier pregnancies
  • Maternal obesity
  • Mothers who are older than 40 or younger than 20
  • Multiple pregnancy
  • Diabetes, kidney disease, lupus or scleroderma
