Postpartum Depression

Symptoms and Signs of Postpartum Depression

Signs of depression resemble symptoms of depression in any other stage of life. Along with feelings of sadness, women with postpartum depression are likely to have some of the following symptoms:

  • Feeling unconnected or withdrawn
  • Being agitated or irritable
  • Having appetite changes
  • Feeling worthless or guilty
  • Feeling withdrawn or unconnected
  • Lacking interest in most activities
  • Lack of concentration and energy
  • Having problems completing tasks at home or work
  • Possessing negative feelings toward the baby
  • Feeling heavy anxiety, and having thoughts of death or suicide
  • Having trouble sleeping

Other symptoms of postpartum depression include the mother feeling that she cannot take care of the baby or herself, being afraid of being alone with the baby, and worrying too intensely about or having little interest in the baby, in some cases the mother having negative thoughts about the baby or even thinking about harming it (though these thoughts are rarely acted upon).
