Placental Insufficiency

Causes of Placental Insufficiency

There are a handful of medical conditions of habits of the mother that are risk factors for placental insufficiency. These include:

  • Diabetes
  • High blood pressure
  • Medical conditions that increase the chances of blood clots
  • Cigarette smoking
  • Certain medications

In addition, abnormally shaped placentas or placentas that have not grown big enough (particularly in cases of a multiple pregnancy) can be causes of placental insufficiency. This condition can also be caused by a placenta that does not attach to the surface of the uterus correctly, or if the placenta breaks away from the uterine surface and bleeds.
