Causes of Placenta Previa

The causes of placenta previa are unknown; however, the condition is associated with a number of potential risk factors, including:

  • Uterine-wall scarring from a previous pregnancy
  • Fibroids or other uterine abnormalities
  • Previous uterine surgeries or Cesarean deliveries
  • Many previous pregnancies
  • A multiple pregnancy (i.e., twins, triplets, etc.)
  • An abnormally shaped uterus
  • Cigarette smoking
  • Mothers over the age of 35
  • Mothers who are African American or a member of another minority race
  • A previous placenta previa
