Pentosan polysulfate is a medication used to relieve that bladder pain and discomfort associated with a condition called interstitial cystitis, a disease characterized by a chronic inflammation of the bladder wall. As this disease has no cure—or even a surefire method of diagnosis—treatments, including pentosan polysulfate, aim to ameliorate symptoms such as chronic pelvic pain, pain during sex and frequent urination.

Sold under the brand name Elmiron, pentosan polysulfate is similar to a group of medications called low molecular weight heparins, and works by preventing the irritation of the bladder walls, which it does by coating the bladder in the same way Pepto-Bismol coats the stomach. Like most medications, pentosan polysulfate does have some side effects, including headache, difficulty sleeping, nausea, moodiness and dizziness.

Finding the right treatment for interstitial cystitis can require a trial-and-error approach, and sometimes doctors will use a combination of various treatment methods, which may or may not include pentosan polysulfate.
