Patent Ductus Arteriosus (PDA)

Symptoms and Signs of Patent Ductus Arteriosus (PDA)

There is a relationship between the size of the PDA and its symptoms, their severity and the age at which they are first noticed. Indeed, a small PDA may not cause any symptoms at all; however, the larger the PDA, the more blood will pass through and overload the lungs. In the case of a small PDA, the only symptom a doctor notices may be a heart murmur. Symptoms of larger PDAs can include:

  • Fast, heavy or congested breathing
  • Poor feeding habits
  • Rapid pulse
  • Shortness of breath
  • Sweating during feedings
  • Poor weight gain or growth
  • Fatigue
