The statistics on osteoporosis include:

  • In the U.S., more than 10 million people over age 50 have osteoporosis
  • 34 million Americans over age 50 have osteopenia, or low bone mass
  • Osteoporosis primarily affects men over age 65 and women following menopause
  • Women are four times more likely than men to develop osteoporosis
  • In the five to seven years after menopause, a woman can lose up to 20 percent of her bone mass
