Adult Epilepsy Program

Comprehensive approach provides better outcomes

As one of the only adult and pediatric epilepsy programs in Florida, our comprehensive approach allows us to obtain the most accurate diagnosis and provide individualized treatment options. We believe that obtaining an accurate diagnosis is the key to finding the proper treatment for adult epilepsy patients. In fact, our physicians follow and use recommendations by the American Neurology Council. Among our recognitions:

  • Level 4 Epilepsy Center designation from the National Association of Epilepsy Centers (NAEC)
  • Highest epilepsy-surgery volume in Florida*
  • The only tuberous sclerosis (TSC) clinic in Florida that treats both children and adults as designated by the Tuberous Sclerosis Alliance
  • One of the only physician-led Ketogenic diet programs in Central Florida

Comprehensive Treatment

Each patient receives a customized, multi-phased treatment plan that includes a neuropsychological and hospital evaluation. Since we are a destination treatment facility for epilepsy — one of the largest and most comprehensive programs in the nation — we offer some of the most advanced technologies available. That’s why we not only treat patients from across the United States, but also Europe, South America and Africa. Our advanced treatments include:

  • Gamma knife radiosurgery — only facility in the region offering this option
  • Vagal nerve stimulation (VNS)
  • Laser ablation
  • Epilepsy drug trials
  • TSC clinic

Advanced Diagnostic Testing

Florida Hospital is at the forefront of adult epilepsy diagnostic testing by offering one of the only magnetoencephalography (MEG) procedures — a non-invasive technique that measures the brain’s magnetic activity — performed in Florida. We also provide these additional diagnostic tools:

  • Three-Tesla magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
  • Intraoperative MRI
  • Functional MRI
  • Positron emission tomography (PET) scan
  • F-18 fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) PET
  • Wada testing
  • Cortical mapping
  • Somatosensory evoked potential (SSEP) testing
  • 18-bed Epilepsy Monitoring Unit (EMU)

Meet Our Team of Epilepsy Experts

Together these board-certified physicians have more than 60 years of experience in epilepsy and epilepsy surgery. Supporting them is a team of individuals committed to the care and treatment of seizures, including pediatric neuropsychologists, neuroradiologists, neuropathologists, dieticians, social workers, research scientists and nurse practitioners. We treat each case individually, and we always strive to provide the most compassionate care for each of our patients and their families.
