Kidney Stone Center

Kidney stones—also called renal lithiasis—are small, hard deposits made of mineral and acid salts that form inside the kidney. These kidney stones can have many causes, though they often form when urine becomes concentrated, causing minerals to stick together and crystalize. In most cases, kidney stones cause no permanent damage, although passing them can be extremely painful.

In 1985, Florida Hospital Orlando opened the Kidney Stone Center, the first treatment center of its kind to use ultrasound energy to break up kidney stones. Our goal is to eliminate these stones with the least amount of pain possible.

Usually we can accomplish this through a non-invasive procedure. First our experts locate the stone through either an x-ray or ultrasound. Then, we use a device called a lithotripter to deliver shock waves through the body. These waves are harmless to normal tissue, but they break kidney stones into small pieces, which can then be more easily excreted through the urinary system.

At the Florida Hospital Orlando Kidney Stone Center, however, we weren’t content to stop there. In fact, we’ve expanded our services, and in addition to treating kidney stones, we now offer a wide range of urological care services for our neighbors and visitors in Central Florida.
