Joint Replacement: Total Knee Arthroplasty

The knee is the largest joint in the body.  It is a hinged joint, designed to bend and straighten.  It is the single most important joint in a person’s ability to walk.   The knee is also the most vulnerable joint to injury as well as wear and tear because it bears all of our body weight while providing flexible movement.  Strong knees are essential as you go about your life long daily activities.

A painful knee can make it harder to enjoy an active life.  Finding relief can become a priority.  There are many treatment options available, and finding the best option for you is important.

First and foremost, it is important to get an accurate diagnosis of the cause of your knee pain so that you can receive proper treatment.  The Florida Hospital Orthopaedic Institute Orlando specializes in evaluating and diagnosing knee problems. Several surgical treatment options are offered including tibial or femoral osteotomy, partial knee replacement, MAKOplasty, and total knee replacement

Total knee replacement surgery — also known as total knee arthroplasty (ARTH-row-plas-tee) can help relieve pain and restore function in severely diseased knee joints. The word “replacement” often gives the impression that your entire knee is being removed and replaced. However, the surgery is more accurately described as “knee resurfacing.”  The orthopaedic surgeon cuts away and restores the weight bearing surfaces of the damaged or “worn out” knee joint. The damaged areas will be replaced with an artificial joint made of metal alloys and high grade plastics.  These new implants create smooth surfaces which allow the bones to glide against each other just like a natural healthy knee would.
