Deformity Correction Program

At the Florida Hospital Orthopaedic Institute Orlando (FHOIO), our patients’ musculoskeletal concerns are treated with compassion and care. Some may have decided to address a childhood issue that has affected their lifestyle. Others may be dealing with complications of orthopedic conditions. And still others may want to overcome the debilitating effects of leg, ankle and foot deformity injuries.

J. Dean Cole, MD, a leader in orthopedic trauma and the medical director of the FHOIO, is an orthopedic deformity correction specialist. J. Dean Cole, MD has assembled a dedicated team of medical professionals with the experience and skill to diagnose and treat deformities, and has even invented devices used in limb lengthening. His team approach plays an important role in the FHOIO’s successful outcomes with orthopedic deformity correction.

J. Dean Cole, MD’s longstanding use of minimally invasive surgery to treat leg deformities has helped the Florida Hospital Orthopaedic Institute Orlando stand out among orthopedic facilities. Patients who have undergone procedures at the FHOIO have experienced positive improvements in their lifestyles and well-being. Using a minimally invasive approach, FHOIO physicians can change a patient’s life, giving him or her the gift of functional lower extremities. After a lifetime wearing lifts, braces and other cumbersome equipment, some patients can finally be free of these needs.

While our lower extremities enable important movement and mobility, they are also susceptible to a number of issues. Whether due to injury, childhood illness or existing conditions, deformities represent serious medical concerns. When seeking effective treatment for an orthopedic deformity, it’s essential to consult with orthopedic specialists who possess unique experience.

At the Florida Hospital Orthopaedic Institute Orlando (FHOIO), our surgical staff provides expert diagnosis and treatments for multiple deformities. J. Dean Cole, MD, the Center’s medical director, is a leader in the field of orthopedic deformity correction surgery. He has developed a full range of unique approaches for congenital and developmental deformities of the lower extremities.

When it comes to surgery, our staff embraces a minimally invasive philosophy. J. Dean Cole, MD and his colleagues can surgically correct any limb deformity as well as any associated complications. As patients heal and regain mobility, they’re able to maintain their lifestyles.

The minimally invasive approach emphasizes small rather than large incisions. Consequently, patients’ blood supplies to the involved bones and soft tissues are better maintained. In turn, this improves healing and recovery rates, allowing patients to return to normal activities sooner. Because smaller incisions minimize the risks of large wounds on the skin, infections and blood loss are both reduced, and patients are left with less scarring. J. Dean Cole, MD and his team utilize minimally invasive orthopedic procedures to treat diseases and injuries to bones, cartilage, ligaments, muscles and tendons.

In the history of the Florida Hospital Orthopaedic Institute Orlando, our physicians have achieved a superior level of successful outcomes. Once the necessary surgeries are finished, the Center’s patients are afforded the opportunity to have functional lower extremities. These individuals are also free to move around without the need for any lifts and braces.

Living with a deformed limb can take a toll on patients’ lifestyles and well-being. J. Dean Cole, MD and his colleagues have accumulated more than 25 years of experience and skill in surgically correcting deformities of the lower extremities, which means that our patients are assured some of the best care available. Patient Stories

As a child, Lee Ann was diagnosed with neurofibromatosis, a set of genetic disorders, which caused a deformity of her leg called a nonunion. This condition required multiple childhood surgeries, leaving her leg deformed. As an adult, Lee Ann learned J. Dean Cole, MD could successfully treat both her leg deformity and length discrepancy.

After Lee Ann’s first evaluation by Dr. J. Dean Cole, he recommended a series of surgeries that would ultimately give her a normal-looking and -functioning leg. Her initial surgery addressed the leg deformity; it involved breaking the bone in multiple places to realign it with a device (called an intramedullary nail) inside the bone. Once these fractures healed, Lee Ann was a candidate for leg lengthening.

J. Dean Cole, MD used the Intramedullary Skeletal Kinetic Distractor (ISKD), a device he invented especially for bone lengthening. This device is the only one of its kind used internally to lengthen bone, and does not interfere too much with the patient’s lifestyle. After several surgeries, Lee Ann’s leg is now able to function and look like a normal healthy leg. This treatment will allow Lee Ann to walk normally and even wear high heels for the first time in her life.
