ORLANDO, Fla. Nov. 9, 2016 — Members of the Orlando Solar Bears hockey team — along with their mascot Shades — took their talents off the ice and to Florida Hospital for Children to visit with young patients today.
Six players and Shades chatted and played games with the patients and their families, even posing for an elaborate contribution to the current mannequin social media craze. They then went room-to-room to visit kids who weren’t able to attend the event.
“I spent some time in the hospital as a kid … and it’s not an easy place to be,” said Eric Baier, the team’s captain. “Simply by walking in to their rooms and saying ‘hi’ or maybe signing an autograph for them — how it makes the difference for them a little bit, whether it’s just a few minutes of the day — that means a lot to us.”
Baier said he and his teammates have visited patients at Florida Hospital for Children more times than he can remember. The hospital includes a Solar Bears-themed playroom designed to be half ice rink, half Solar Bears locker room.
