New Cardiovascular Operating Room Director

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla., March 17, 2017 – Florida Hospital Memorial Medical Center has selected Steve Bertovich to serve as the cardiovascular operating room director.

In Florida Hospital Memorial Medical Center’s cardiovascular operating room and cardiac catheterization lab, the teams perform approximately 350 open-heart surgeries, 300 balloon angioplasties, 1,500 cardiac catheterizations and 600 coronary artery stent implants each year. As cardiovascular operating room director, Bertovich will oversee the cardiovascular operating room staff, including the highly skilled nurses, scrub technicians, surgical assistants and perfusionist. In addition, he will collaborate with the cardiovascular surgeons who perform state-of-the-art surgical procedures using both traditional open approaches, as well as minimally invasive techniques on the heart, lungs and peripheral vascular structures.

Bertovich has nearly 30 years of experience in the operating room, and began his career in 1990 as a nurse. Over the last three decades, he has served as a registered nurse first assistant (RNFA), directly assisting surgeons in the operating room, and has also been responsible for establishing three new open heart programs throughout the country.

Most recently, he served as the assistant director of the main operating room at Florida Hospital Memorial Medical Center, overseeing the operating rooms, post-anesthesia care unit, ambulatory surgery unit, endoscopy unit, surgical holding area, pre-admission testing and the sterile processing department.

An Ormond-by-the-Sea resident, Bertovich earned his diploma in nursing from Ohio Valley Hospital School of Nursing, currently Trinity Health Systems, in Ohio, as well as a Bachelor of Science in Nursing and Master of Business Administration from Waynesburg College in Pennsylvania. Additionally, he is a member of the Association of Operating Room Nurses (AORN) and received his Certified Nurse Operating Room (CNOR) certification through AORN.
