Florida Hospital Zephyrhills Wants You to Be Your Own Best Medicine

The CREATION® Health Wellness Center at Florida Hospital Zephyrhills (FHZ) is offering the Complete Health Improvement Program (CHIP) to the community from 3 pm to 4 pm beginning Tuesday, May 23, in its Education Room at 38233 Daughtery Road. The class will meet every Tuesday and Thursday thereafter through Thursday, July 27. The only exception is the week of July 3 when classes are cancelled due to the holiday.

CHIP was founded in 1988 by Hans Diehl, DrHSc, MPH, FACN, clinical professor of preventative medicine at Loma Linda University in California. It’s a lifestyle enrichment program designed to reduce disease risk factors through the adoption of better health habits and lifestyle changes, according to Veronique Polo, MHA, CRM, the Wellness Center’s Life Coach and one of the course facilitators. “The curriculum, when followed faithfully, has an excellent track record of reducing cholesterol, hypertension, blood sugar levels and excess weight,” Polo said. “Even for someone who does not have a chronic health condition, CHIP can be a positive game changer.”

Every class participant will get a CHIP binder containing educational material which will be the topic of class sessions and discussions led by Polo, Myriam Parham, RD, CDE, the hospital’s Diabetes Education Coordinator, and Doug Higgins, MDiv, FHZ Senior Chaplain. Eight of the classes include healthy cooking demonstrations, Polo said, because learning to eat and prepare foods healthfully is key to one’s success with CHIP. “We intend to keep the class relatively small so that we can give lots of individual attention to our students,” Polo added. “This is a big commitment on their part.”

Polo added that this is the second CHIP class that FHZ’s Wellness Center has offered to the community.

Normally, Polo said, the class retails for $599 but the CREATION® Health Wellness Center will offer it for $299. Moreover, the first 20 people to register will receive a $100 scholarship, Polo added.

CHIP is by registration only and the Wellness Center will accept cash, checks and most major credit cards. To register or learn more, call (813) 779-6476 or visit .
