Florida Hospital Zephyrhills, in cooperation with The Samaritan Project, held a drive to gather donations for school supplies and backpacks to support needy children in East Pasco County. The drive rallied employees of Florida Hospital Zephyrhills to donate 90 stuffed backpacks and three boxes of school supplies to these families to help them get ready for school. The drive was held from July 20, 2015 through August 18, 2015 at the hospital.
The hospital would like to share a story from one of their employees who had a wonderful experience while shopping for backpacks in our local community. This story was shared with the Florida Hospital family through Charles McEndree, Administrative Director of Operations and lead coordinator of the backpack drive.
“Bill Eschner, our Material Management Manager, went to Dollar General to purchase backpacks with money donated by our employees. He bought all the backpacks on the shelf and asked a store employee if there were more, explaining that Florida Hospital Zephyrhills was sponsoring kids who needed school supplies in the community. The employee felt bad that there were no more backpacks and said he wanted to donate to the backpack drive. A person standing in the check- out line overheard the conversation and told the cashier that she wanted to use her teacher discount to help the hospital purchase more backpacks. The cashier agreed and it inspired more people in line to also donate items. One lady was so touched by the generosity of the customers and store clerk that she began crying because she was overwhelmed by everyone’s generosity and care for others in our community.”
This story truly demonstrates the generosity and pay it forward character of people living and working in East Pasco. Florida Hospital Zephyrhills wishes to thank those who donated money and school supplies so that the hospital could bless others. The Samaritan Project determines the families in need of help, with the number in need exceeding the number of backpacks donated every year.
