Florida Hospital Recognized as the Only Tuberous Sclerosis Clinic in Central Florida

Only clinic in the state of Florida that treats both pediatric and adult patients

ORLANDO, Fla., December 18, 2013- Florida Hospital is honored to officially receive Tuberous Sclerosis Clinic designation by the Tuberous Sclerosis Alliance Board of Directors. Tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC) is a genetic disorder that causes non-malignant tumors to form in many different organs, primarily in the brain, eyes, heart, kidney, skin and lungs. Florida Hospital is the only clinic with this designation in Central Florida and the only one in the state of Florida that treats both pediatric and adult patients.

“The Tuberous Sclerosis Clinic at Florida Hospital is privileged to have earned this recognition,” said Ki Hyeong Lee, medical director of the Pediatric Epilepsy Program at Florida Hospital for Children and TSC Clinic Director. “Caring for TSC patients requires a comprehensive team approach. Our clinic is working to provide world class medical care to these patients and their families right here in Central Florida.”

The aspects of TSC that most strongly impact quality of life are generally associated with the brain: seizures, developmental delay, intellectual disability and autism. The TS Alliance recognizes clinics that will aid in more effectively treating patients that suffer from TSC. Tuberous Sclerosis Clinics provide comprehensive care to patients with this complex disease and have met required national standards of excellence.

The Tuberous Sclerosis Alliance supports the vital role that a TSC clinic can play in improving the lives of those affected and has recognized only 40 of these clinics in the United States. TSC Clinic at Florida Hospital was founded in 2012 and currently follows more than 20 patients. Since 2012, four TSC patients, whose major symptom of the disease is epilepsy, have undergone brain surgery for treatment of intractable epilepsy, and all patients remain seizure-free.
