DEBARY, Fla., December 10, 2015 – On Dec. 2, the community joined Florida Hospital Fish Memorial for “Palliative Care: Helping Patients Live Life to the Fullest” at the DeBary Golf and Country Club. This free seminar addressed how palliative care can provide comprehensive support to people living with serious illnesses, such as cancer, and their families.
Palliative care is a type of specialized medical care for people facing life-threatening illnesses like cancer. It focuses on providing patients with relief from the symptoms and stress of a serious illness and strives to improve quality of life for both the patient and the family.
The Baby Boomer generation is aging and by 2030, all the Boomers will be officially older than 65 and will represent approximately 20 percent of the population,” said Diane Trask, Florida Hospital HospiceCare community liaison. “As Americans increase in age, so will the prevalence of chronic diseases. In addition, advancements in medical technology will prolong the lives of those with serious illnesses. With this in mind, palliative care will begin to play an even more important role in our healthcare spectrum.”
Palliative care focuses on preventing and relieving suffering and supports the best possible quality of life for patients facing serious illness.
“It is important to note that palliative care is not the same thing as hospice care - rather hospice is a type of palliative care. This special type of health care focuses on alleviating pain by treating the whole person as patients continue being treated to cure their illness,” said Jennifer MacDonald, Florida Hospital HospiceCare advanced registered nurse practitioner for palliative care.
