The flamingo flock is heading back to town.
“Pink Out Winter Park,” the colorful Central Florida tradition that raises funds for breast cancer screenings and supports awareness efforts, launches Tuesday with sales of the iconic yard flamingo.
Thousands of flamingos have been purchased since 2011 and have been placed in front yards, outside businesses, and in “flocks” throughout Winter Park. Each flamingo includes a nametag honoring someone affected by breast cancer.
Proceeds from the flamingo sales go to the Winter Park Memorial Hospital Mammography Scholarship Fund, which has helped nearly 180 women who otherwise could not afford the screening. Six of those women were diagnosed with cancer and received treatment.
“The unique aspect of ‘Pink Out Winter Park’ is not only does it provide breast cancer awareness, but it gives women the opportunity to receive a life-saving mammogram through the scholarship fund,” said Dr. Lori Boardman, medical director of Florida Hospital for Women.
Although the nation’s goal for breast cancer screening is 81 percent, only 50 percent of women in Central Florida received a mammogram last year, Boardman said.
“Women often put the health care needs of others before their own,” Boardman said. “Through initiatives such as ‘Pink Out Winter Park,’ Florida Hospital is committed to providing convenient and comprehensive breast care to the women of our community.”
Pink flamingos will be sold for $10 at select Winter Park businesses throughout September and October, including at Walk on Water in Winter Park Village.
“Our business is a ‘boutique with a purpose,’” said Carol Imbs, a cancer survivor who works at Walk on Water. “This is a perfect fit for our store.”
Not only does Walk on Water support local community outreach efforts, but Pink Out is an important initiative for Imbs.
“My passion is to pay it forward and help all of those who are on the journey,” Imbs said. Pink Out Winter Park helps her do just that.
Additional pink items will also be sold at merchants throughout Winter Park. For a list of participating businesses, visit pinkoutwinterpark.com.
