Five Patients Receive Free Hip and Knee Surgery

Five Patients Receive Free Hip and Knee Surgery Today at Florida Hospital Celebration Health

As part of Operation Walk USA, a national program to offer free and hip and knee replacements to those that are unable to afford surgery

CELEBRATION, Fla. Dec. 6, 2013 – Five people in Central Florida are among 230 nationwide that will receive free hip and knee surgery this week.  The five local surgeries at Florida Hospital Celebration Health are taking place today.  Operation Walk USA is a volunteer effort on behalf of more than 120 volunteer orthopaedic surgeons and 70 participating hospitals in 32 states. With the start of the holiday month, this was also a timely way for orthopaedic surgeons to give back to patients and help improve their quality of life and mobility.

Arthritic disease is the most common cause of disability in the U.S., affecting approximately 48 million Americans, or more than 21 percent of the adult population. The debilitating pain of end-stage hip or knee degenerative disease often makes working, or completing even the simplest of daily tasks, excruciatingly painful or impossible. Hip and knee replacement surgeries are the most cost-effective and successful of all orthopaedic procedures, eliminating pain and allowing patients to resume active, productive lives. Without insurance or the ability to pay for surgery and rehabilitation, many people just try to live with hip and knee pain.

“Many of these patients are in such bad shape they are unable to walk without extreme pain,” said Dr. David Dore, medical director of the Joint Replacement Center at Florida Hospital Celebration Health.  “By applying to have hip or knee replacement through Operation Walk USA, they will not incur a mountain of medical bills just to be able to live pain free.  This is the third year that Celebration Health has participated in Operation Walk USA.”

The patients selected for Operation Walk USA must meet financial need criteria, are in relatively good health (other than their knee or hip) and have a family support system and an appropriate location for a successful recovery.

The five Operation Walk USA surgeries were performed at Florida Hospital Celebration Health by Dr. David Dore and Dr. Matthew Johnston.  It takes a true team effort to provide holistic care for these patients. The groups that donated goods and services to make surgery possible for these patients are Florida Hospital Celebration Health, Celebration Orthopaedic and Sports Medicine Institute, Celebration Internal Medicine, JLR Medical Group, Zimmer Prosthetics, Pinnacle Home Health Care, Florida Hospital Home Infusion, Amedysis Home Health Care and past patients who donated medical equipment.
