Necrotizing Enterocolitis (NEC)

Screening and Tests for Necrotizing Enterocolitis (NEC)

Screening for NEC involves an examination for the condition’s symptoms, including distention and feeding intolerance. An abdominal x-ray may confirm the diagnosis is there is an abnormal gas pattern in the intestines and signs of air or gas in the liver veins. In addition, doctors may insert a needle into the abdomen; if they withdraw intestinal fluid, it may indicate a hole in the intestine.
