Symptoms and Signs of Myelomeningocele

The most prominent sign of myelomeningocele is a sac sticking out the baby’s mid or lower back that the doctor cannot see through when shining a light behind it. Other symptoms of this condition include:

  • Loss od bladder or bowel control
  • Partial or complete lack of sensation
  • Partial or complete leg paralysis
  • Weakness of the baby’s hips, legs or feet
  • Abnormal feet or lungs (e.g., clubfoot)
  • Hydrocephalus (a buildup of fluid inside the skull)
  • Hair at the sacral area (the back part of the pelvis)
  • Dimpling of the sacral area
