Prevention of Myelomeningocele

Taking folic acid supplements before getting pregnant and during pregnancy can help reduce the risk of a baby being born with neural tube defects, including myelomeningocele. Women considering having a baby should take 0.4 mg of folic acid daily, and pregnant women should take 1 mg per day. In addition, prospective mothers can be screened to determine the amount of folic acid in their blood so that any deficiencies can be detected and corrected as early as possible.
