Movement Disorders

Symptoms and Signs of Movement Disorders

The symptoms of movement disorders vary depending on the specific condition, and their severity is sometimes affected by stress, anxiety, fatigue and medications. Some movement disorders cause a condition called hyperkinesia, which is characterized by excessive spontaneous movement or abnormal involuntary movement, while others cause hypokinesia, or a decreased ability to perform a purposeful movement.

Abnormal movements can be rhythmic or irregular, or rapid and jerky or slow and sustained. In most cases, these irregular movements cannot be consciously controlled.
