Statistics of Miscarriage

The facts are that between 10 and 20 percent of all pregnancies end in miscarriage, or a spontaneous abortion before the 20th week of gestation, often in the first trimester and before the woman even knows she is pregnant, and that 60 to 70 percent of couples who suffer recurrent miscarriage (meaning more than three) will go on to have a healthy pregnancy. While miscarriages are normally preceded by vaginal bleeding and intense cramping, light bleeding does not necessarily mean that a miscarriage is occurring—in fact, 30 percent of pregnancies are accompanied by vaginal spotting.
