DAYTONA BEACH, Fla., March 3, 2014 – Shonnette Bennett has been selected to serve as a Registered Nurse Cancer Registrar at Florida Hospital Memorial Medical Center.
In this role, Bennett is responsible for capturing the data that informs cancer research, prevention and treatment programs. As a cancer registrar, Bennett will collect and code patient-level data for state and national cancer registries. These registries provide essential information to researchers, healthcare providers and health officials so that they can better monitor and improve cancer treatment, conduct research and target cancer prevention and screening programs.
“My first love in nursing has always been oncology. My new role as a RN Cancer Registrar gives me an opportunity to explore it in a new way,” Bennett said. “Also, I am so blessed to work with such an amazing team. We are a close-knit family!”
Bennett previously served as Florida Hospital Memorial Medical Center’s Cancer Research Coordinator where she was responsible for organizing the hospital’s cancer research program. This included recruiting cancer clinical trial participants, collecting research data, ensuring compliance and ensuring patient safety.
Bennett, a Samsula resident, earned an Associate of Science in Nursing and is a Registered Nurse. Additionally, she has earned the Certified Tumor Registrar (CTR®) credential by the National Cancer Registrars Association’s Council on Certification. To earn this specialized certification, she had to successfully complete a comprehensive examination on principles of cancer data abstracting and coding, plus registry management, legal issues, specialized coding, anatomy, physiology, cancer histology, statistics and methodology. She joins nearly 7,000 others who have met the extensive education and work experience requirements for certification as a credentialed Cancer Registrar.
