Community Joins Florida Hospitals to Learn About Neurologic Health Issues

ORMOND BEACH, Fla., June 21, 2017 — On June 19, nearly 120 community members joined Florida Hospital Flagler and Florida Hospital Memorial Medical Center for a free community seminar at Halifax Plantation in Ormond Beach.

Over a healthy lunch, neurosurgeon Dr. Christopher Kent discussed neck and back pain.

“Initially, I was going to give a talk on brain tumors, but it was brought to my attention that many people don’t know how to begin to work through their spine pain or what type of doctor to see,” Kent said. “Back pain and neck pain accounts for the second most common reason to see a physician.”

In the vast majority of lower back pain or neck pain cases, the symptoms will resolve without the need for any therapy.

“However, weakness, changes related to the bowel or bladder changes, as well as unremitting extremity pain can be indications that will require more urgent evaluation,” he said. “Bottom-line, the three best things that patients can do for themselves to ease neck and back pain is stop smoking, keep their weight down, and stay flexible and fit.”
