Meconium Aspiration Syndrome

Screening and Tests for Meconium Aspiration Syndrome

Screening for meconium aspiration syndrome begins by fetal monitoring during pregnancy that shows a slow heart rate. After the birth, the doctor will look for the presence of meconium in the amniotic fluid. A chest x-ray and a blood gas test (which determines if the baby is getting enough oxygen) can also help in diagnosing meconium aspiration.
