Treatments for Malunion

Treatment options for malunions almost always involve cutting the bone at or near the site of the original fracture. This osteotomy, as it’s called, is performed to correct the misalignment. Along with this procedure, plates, rods or an external frame with pins may be used to hold the bones in the correct position, and in cases where the malunion has produced a shortening of the bone, bone lengthening may be necessary.
