Lobectomy

Side Effects of Lobectomy

As with any surgical procedure, patients should understand the risk of side effects of lobectomy. Even minimally invasive procedures and robotic procedures have risks. In fact, it may be safer for some patients to undergo traditional lobectomy.

Speak to your doctor about what you can expect from surgery and to learn as much as possible about these potential side effects of lobectomy:
  • Infection of the incision
  • Tension pnumothorax or air trapped in chest cavity can cause the lung to collapse
  • Hemorrhage or bleeding
  • Bronchopleural fistula or a tube-like opening where air escapes into the surgical area
  • Empyema or an accumulation of pus in the chest cavity

These are only some of the side effects patients should understand before undergoing surgery.
